Dining Tables: the social factor…
Firstly, decide how you’d like to use your dining table. Is it for a family? You and your partner? For everyday use? Buffet-style serving? Or for special occasions?
The use of your dining table will help determine the correct table size you require which will help with perfecting the ideal furniture arrangement in your desired room.
It’s important to take into consideration both practical and design factors that support your household's needs so the room is functional. For example, if you host ad hoc dinner parties, consider extendable dining tables, like the Morris Table below. Extendable dining tables offer flexibility by being able to adapt to small and large gatherings in a seamless manner.

What to consider when deciding on dining table shape…
Circle Dining Table:
Enables diners to easily see everyone at the dinner table. Everyone can partake in the conversation. If it’s a small circle, everyone can easily reach the middle of the table. If it’s a large circle, you can consider adding a Lazy Susan.
These tables are ideal for tight dining spaces in square rooms.

Rectangle Dining Table:
These tables have limited seating options but work well in rectangular dining rooms.
Custom-made dining tables give you the option to design a table to suit the exact width and length of your room to make the most of the space available. Alternatively, you could consider an extendable table with leaves.

Square Dining Table:
Square dining tables are a good option when you’re seating a small group. Thus, the conversation can flow smoothly and intimately.
These tables fit most spaces, helping maintain balance and proportion in rooms that are symmetrical.
Oval Dining Table:
Softer on the eye and easier to navigate the surrounding space without any sharp corners.
Oval tables give the length of a rectangle table but with the flexibility of a round table. The curved corners enable you to fit more chairs if needed.
A good rule of thumb when it comes to dining tables…
Round tables are perfect for small dining areas.
Rectangular tables have a flexible advantage when needing to fit into dining areas - most homes are based on a rectangular design.
When measuring space, leaving 1000mm - 1200mm between the edge of the table and the wall will help with people walking behind someone seating.
Once you have decided on the shape of the table for your space, keep in mind what chairs you would like to surround the table. Some chairs are wider, some are smaller. The shape and design of the chairs can then help with the choice of table frame that will best suit the style and space of your area.
